Red Dogs and Pink Skies is a full color, sumptuously designed book exploring Paul Gauguin’s ideas about painting and music. A CD of original music, composed by Bruce Adolphe and inspired by Gauguin’s work and ideas, is included. Adolphe and Polenghi, composer and painter, have created an accessible, engaging, and thought-provoking testament to Gauguin in music, images, and text, replete with quotes from Gauguin’s writings, and enhanced by a timeline highlighting events in the artist’s life in the context of music, science, literature, politics, and daily life. The book is filled with borders and background designs derived from elements that can be found in Gauguin’s paintings. Together, the music and book celebrate the relationship of painting to music.

Whether it’s about a fugitive turkey, a mysterious message from the moon, or a teenage T. rex, Bruce Adolphe’s music captures the hearts and minds of audiences of all ages. Bruce has composed music for Itzhak Perlman, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the National Symphony, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Beaux Arts Trio, Sylvia McNair, the Brentano Quartet, and many other renowned musicians and organizations. A composer, author, actor, pianist and scriptwriter, Bruce has earned a national reputation as a leading figure in the field of music education and audience development. Renowned for combining comedy and musical scholarship, he has been the lecturer of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 1992 and a featured speaker at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2001, as well as a frequent guest lecturer at many of the country’s premier concert series and festivals, music schools and education conferences. A prolific author, Bruce has written three books on the art of listening to music: The Mind’s Ear: Exercises for Improving the Musical Imagination; What to Listen for in the World; and Of Mozart, Parrots and Cherry Blossoms in the Wind: A Composer Explores Mysteries of the Musical Mind. He has appeared on nationally televised Live from Lincoln Center broadcasts, and is often a guest on National Public Radio. Bruce’s latest radio venture is a comic musical quiz show featuring his renditions of familiar tunes in the styles of famous composers for NPR.
A versatile virtuoso of visual media, Evan Polenghi has created fine art, illustrations, and designs that can be found in such diverse locations as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, collections in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Japan, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Gap/Banana Republic, Absolut, and the walls of public schools throughout New York City. Those cheerful murals, collaborations between Evan and New York Cares for New York public schools, are part of an ongoing innovative educational Polenghi project called WallsforKids.com. An artist without conventional walls himself, Evan has designed pillows, carpets, and bedding for the Verduno Collection, and plays lead guitar in the rock-fusion band Citi-Zen. Born in New York into a family of artists and raised in Milan, Italy, Evan cannot remember a time when he wasn’t drawing. He is represented by Robert Pardo Gallery in New York.
