Trying to get my mind around something as complex as Meredith Hodges and her mule-world is as worrisome as wrestling with a two-ton gorilla in the dark. For such a petite woman, Meredith casts a long shadow in the equine world. Always working toward the promotion of good longears, you can count on Meredith to be where the action is. If its classy and it can be done with a mule, most likely, Meredith has been there and done that. Imagine this! One video she produced includes her riding one of the best looking mules I ever laid an eye on, doing 4th Level Dressage to the accompaniment of a formal orchestra. She has accomplished feats with her mules many horse trainers can only dream about.
Because of the increased popularity of mules, more and more books are being written to guide the novice owner in the proper method of dealing with a mule. Meredith will be the first to tell you a mule is not a horse with long ears, which is what many pilgrims think. Her new book is full of general management and training guidelines. This is a great book for someone new to mules or someone approaching the training of mules for the first time. Truthfully Ive been riding and training mules for the last 18 or so years and I found this book very informative. Anyone who is a lover of mules will enjoy the illustrations.
After all, who cant find a little time to dream when you see photographs of quality mules. Meredith presents the information in an easy to read, understandable language. The book is laid out as an everything-you-need-to-know guide. Topics include getting to know mules, housing and transport, feed and nutrition, caring for your mule, keeping it healthy, riding, packing, driving, and showing. Some of the areas are covered in more depth than others. For example this is not a source of information on packing your mule, even though, she does mention the topic and trail riding information was a little sparse, but other than that you can learn a lot. And even though the book is quite large, it is a quick read. - Betty Robinson --Mules and More Magazine
