You think there s no fun or easy way to help your children memorize the Ten Commandments? Check out this quirky little book for a big surprise. Zak s odd experiences have a way of sticking in a child s mind, and when they do, the Commandments get stuck there, too. Church tree houses, two-timing sticks and the ultimate ink pen may seem to have little to do with the world s most famous, most essential rules for living. But that s not the point. The point is to give kids a rhyming memory peg-in this case, ten pegs-where they can hang a thought. This book does that one thing quite well. It s been kid-tested and kid-approved, with startling results. Keep in mind: Zak doesn t go very far toward explaining the Commandments. He simply helps kids remember what they are. Once they ve got the essentials memorized, it s your job to do the explaining!

If you remember the nursery rhyme that begins ;One, two buckle my shoe; you'll understand the value of number-oriented rhymes for remembering a nonsensical list. Use this same concept with the Ten Commandments, a non-nonsensical list, and a story that ties each commandment to a rhyme, and you have Zak and the Three Tree. Two, Shoe, helps us remember, Do not use the Lord's name in vain, by comparing using God's name in a bad way to Edmund having a stinky shoe in his mouth. As an aid in memorizing the commandments, the book is very effective. You'll want to use additional materials to give your children a complete understanding of each commandment. The last two pages of the book take a step in that direction, but the vignettes associated with each commandment and its rhyme are simplistic. --Ecclectic Homeschool Online
