At the Nukie Nuclear Power Plant, inside the nuclear reactor that sat beneath the big dome, (a.k.a. Reactor Containment Building) a whole lot of fissioning was going on. Where did it come from? Where did it go? A chubby lab rat and a pretty blue bird think they know. They speculate, exaggerate and blame everything they don t understand on their arch-enemy, a cat named Penelope. Who they suspect designed the Nukie Nuclear Power Plant so she could use electricity to cook them for dinner. What they don't know is Penelope is a vegetarian. The book is a creative spin on the “How a Nuclear Plant Works” schematic found in science text books. It was designed to pique the curiosity of the non-scientific minded and has been proven to provoke discussion...between just about anybody!

About the Author:

Amelia Frahm is known for taking contentious, difficult topics and putting them in a format children understand and find interesting. A breast cancer diagnosis at age 34 motivated her to write the award-winning “Tickles Tabitha’s Cancer-tankerous Mommy” for her own children. In October 2001, the book’s release was launched on the Rosie O’Donnell Show. Its release helped pioneer resources for families coping with cancer. In 2011 Frahm released the award-winning and controversial children’s picture book “Nuclear Power: How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works!” Released in the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, both the book and Frahm received harsh criticism from anti-nuclear advocates due to the book’s title/topic. The book was intended as a resource to explain the basic fundamentals of how a nuclear power plant worked. Frahm called it a creative spin on the well-worn “How a Nuclear Power Plant Works” schematic that could be found in many science textbooks. Anti-nuclear critics called it nuclear propaganda for children. She responded by saying: “I believe that fear is fueled by a lack of knowledge and misinformation. If you have read my book you know it provides children an opportunity to learn about nuclear power in a format that is neither pro nor con, but fun and unbiased.” Frahm had worked in the nuclear industry in the 1980’s. A Public Relations/Journalism major she found herself thrust into an industry filled with engineering, science, and technology professionals. One of her job assignments was to create and implement an elementary school program. That assignment is what inspired her to write her book on nuclear power plants. She said, “My intent was to capture the attention of students who did not grasp the technical fundamentals of a nuclear power plant as easily as their science-minded classmates. Students like me!” Frahm is a contributor to the inspirational book “How We Became Breast Cancer Thrivers”, and the creator of “Crack Open a Book!”, the first cancer education school program curriculum written and taught by a cancer survivor. Today it also offers a nuclear literacy school program. Visit NutcrackerPublishing.com for more information. Frahm's own children are now young adults. She, her husband, and their pug, Charleston Chew, reside in the mountains of East Tennessee. Visit her blog at: ameliafrahm.blogspot.com

: "a perfect introduction to nuclear fission for kids of all ages...."

21st Century Science & Technology Magazine : "Refreshingly, there are no politically correct caveats, just simple rhymes that cover the basics of how a reactor works."

Midwest Book Review : "a children's illustrated informational text about understanding nuclear power whose time has come."

Independent Publisher “among the best of the newly released, independently published titles.”

American Nuclear Society's Nuclear Cafe : "I originally wrote this post as a book review, but after three or four edits, I realized that I couldn’t mask my biased opinion...I adore this book...."

Atomic Insights"If you have a young person in your life who loves a good page turner with colorful illustrations, I highly recommend placing an order for future deliver."

"What a joy, to realize that now kids can learn the basic facts about nuclear energy without first being scared witless by talk of duck-and-cover, Mutual Assured Destruction and Faustian Bargains...." -Dr. Theodore Rockwell, Famed Nuclear Expert and Author, The Rickover Effect and Creating the New World.

"Amelia Frahm has written a charming book about where our electricity comes from, and, most specifically, how it’s made in a nuclear plant.  The illustrations by Andrew Handley work perfectly with the rhymed text.  Adults may also benefit from reading this book!" -Gwyneth Cravens, Author of Power to Save the World:  The Truth About Nuclear Energy.

“Amelia Frahm’s new children’s book offers an accurate and age appropriate look at an often misunderstood energy source: Nuclear Power. “Nuclear Power: How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works” allows parents and teachers to address the subject in a fun and interesting way. The current energy crisis is something we must communicate about with our children, and Frahm offers a way to start that dialogue.” -Suzanne Hobbs Baker,  Office of  International Nuclear Energy Policy & Cooperation, US Dept. of Energy/ Executive Director and Contributing Artist, PopAtomic Studios.

“The illustrations are awesome as well as the story line! The story is easy to follow, and the use of the bird, cat, and rat will hook children. The author has done a terrific job on this book.” -Sue Pecora, Kindergarten Teacher, Putnam County School System, Cookville, TN.

“Frahm has jumped onto an important concept with her new children’s book. It’s so powerful to educate our youth on Nuclear Power before they develop some scary misconceived notions. Whether we agree with Nuclear Power or not, we should at least be knowledgeable about how it works and, Frahm’s book gives children a big step up in this arena.” -Nikki Stone, Author, When Turtles Fly, Motivational Speaker, Olympic Gold Medalist-Parent.

“...she takes a complex, often controversial issue, and turns it into a fresh, fun learning adventure.  I’ve long admired Amelia’s quirky and lightly humorous writing style, becoming a fan after her first children’s book years ago. “Nuclear Power:  How a Nuclear Power Plant Really Works” is sure to join the ranks of “Tickles Tabitha’s Cancer-tankerous Mommy” as a one-its-kind resource for parents!” -Beth Gasser, a.k.a., Confessions of a Mom.

"At the Nukie Nuclear Power Plant, inside the nuclear reactor that sat beneath the big dome, a whole lot of fissioning was going on. Where did it come from? Where did it go?" A chubby lab rat and a pretty blue bird think they know and explain how a nuclear power plant really works! They speculate, exaggerate and blame everything they don't understand on their arch-enemy: a cat named Penelope. "Anything that goes wrong for a bird or rat, or raises questions or eyebrows, I blame on a cat," declares the rat. An entertaining look at how nuclear power plants work. Written by Amelia Frahm, author of the award winning "Tickles Tabitha's Cancer-tankerous Mommy." Frahm is better known for advocating cancer awareness than nuclear power. However, in 1982, after college her career began at a nuclear power plant. One of her duties was implementing a school program about nuclear power. Frahm spent last summer test-marketing her book and a school presentation about nuclear power to elementary students. She never imagined a nuclear emergency in Japan would once again make nuclear power plants front page news. When asked about it, she said, "whether it is cancer, nuclear power, or a cat named, Penelope, fear is fueled not by nuclear power, but a lack of knowledge and misinformation."
