9780970636805: Centred in Truth (Volumes 1 & 2)

This is the first major work about Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda (1899-1992)-the visionary monk of the Ramakrishna Order who created the UNESCO-acclaimed Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in Calcutta and who spent a lifetime striving to bring the timeless wisdom of Vedanta into the mainstream of global thought and endeavor. His plans for a humane world civilization inspired some of the greatest public figures of our time. Centred in Truth captures the spiritual elegance of the man-his irresistible personality and his intellectual genius that drew the world's elite to his door. Beautifully written and richly illustrated, this two-volume work brings the Swami's life and work into focus from many points of view-through biography and memoir, writings and reminiscences-to create an unforgettable portrait of a contemporary sage. "Powerhouse of a monk, a man of action with a global vision, great personal integrity, and a zest for life. This moving and inspiring biography will appeal to general readers."-LIBRARY JOURNAL "Brown is a wonderful compiler and an astute cultural historian."-THE BOOK READER

From the Publisher:

This spiritual treasure trove is a historic publication—the first biography ever of Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda (1899–1992), the legendary monk of the Ramakrishna Order who influenced some of the outstanding scholars, artists, and public figures of our time with his exciting and innovative plans for a more harmonious world civilization.

First launched in India to critical acclaim and now available in the U.S., this two-volume edition offers a comprehensive history of this brilliant contemporary sage and his accomplishments. Scholars have deemed it an indispensable resource for anyone interested in Eastern religions, the Ramakrishna Movement, and Vedanta philosophy.

The author, Dr. Shelley Brown, was a leading physician and the former Blood Bank Director of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City before she retired to devote her time to writing. The author’s study of Vedanta philosophy began in 1953 and came full circle in 1987 when she entered a spiritual dialogue with Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda that continued until his death. Their friendship galvanized her contemplative life and inspired her to write this definitive chronicle of the Swami’s life and work. Dr. Brown has published widely and lectured on philosophical as well as medical subjects in the United States and in India.

From the Author:

Writing this book was a spiritual adventure—at times a rather desperate quest for biographical data about a monk who never used the pronoun “I” or revealed his personal history.

People ask what it was like to be in the presence of an authentic spiritual personality. Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda could tell from a person’s attention to details whether he or she was spiritually fit. This insistence on perfection came from Swami Vivekananda, the founder of the Ramakrishna Order, who taught the first monks that spiritual life consisted of choto choto kaj (small, small tasks).

As a young monk in the Ramakrishna Order, Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda was trained by the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna—all God-realized saints. He would later say that the exalted atmosphere in their presence was so intense that it was literally transforming— “altogether another world”—to be in their spiritually charged orbit.

Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda spent more than two decades developing the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in Calcutta. His dreams for the Institute were simply breathtaking. For years he had no money, but money was no object; he knew he was on the right track. All subjects were spiritual from Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda’s perspective. “Music is a path, art is a path, literature is a path, and theater is a path,” he said. “All work can be a means to spiritual life.”

His vision was cosmopolitan, intended for all. His goal was to create global citizens with a deep awareness of the universal wisdom that all great cultures share.
