Cora's dream was to take her daughters away from the repressive south of the 1940s. Carefully, she began to lay plans to make her dream come true. I Leave You My Dreams is a story of one family's quest to find a better life.
Cora and her five daughters first find themselves alone after husband, Webb sets out in search of a job. He is eventually hired in a town about forty miles from his family.
But Cora has been dreaming of going to Los Angeles, where her brother lives. He's told her about the good life his family enjoys there and all the jobs that are available in wartime defense plants.
But when Webb's boss hears talk of their going to California, he threatens to have him arrested and thrown in jail for grand theft.
The story follows their journey, from poverty and disfranchisment in Louisiana, to the land of their dreams--California. Fascinating characters weave in and out of their lives--their Creole neighbor Genevieve, whose life is so suspect, the neighbors refuse to look at her; the suave, sophisticated Mr. Cavanaugh; and the twin sons Webb has fathered with his lover.
I Leave You My Dreams is the second self-published novel by Bernadene High Coleman, following Mama Rose (Spring 2000).
