John W. Streeter, 1908-1998, emerged in his pre-college years as a yachting historian when his paper entitled "Class R Sloops" appeared as a chaper in Edwin J. Schoettles' Sailing Craft. A lifetime sailing a myriad of types of craft, including those designed by Herreshoff, and tenure as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences led to his becoming a maritime historian, a critic of sporting art and an expert in the evolution of yacht design.
