It is very satisfying to see this book come out. As a general surgeon, I have collaborated with Dr. Barrett in the care of many patients. We have offered laparoscopic fundoplication to many patients who have failed medical therapy and who have presented without classic reflux symptoms, but who nevertheless had very debilitating conditions. The outcomes have been extremely gratifying, almost without exception. These patients would not have had this great improvement in the quality of their lives had it not been for Dr. Barrett's clinical acumen, fearless spirit of inquiry, and intense devotion to the well-being of his patients. His insight into the extra-esophageal manifestations of GERD is unique in my experience. It is indeed a privilege, not to mention an adventure, to work with such a pioneer. --B.J. Bryant, M.D., FACS, Battle Creek, Michigan
This book has helped me immensly. I had no heartburn ever! Lots of respiratory problems. This book has been a God-send. Thank you for your efforts in writing this. --Marilyn A. - Michigan
Dr. Barrett has drawn my attention to a previously under-diagnosed relationship between esophageal reflux/inflammation and the part it plays in other multisystem illnesses and complaints. In my own practice, I have been impressed with how the treatment of esophageal reflux improves other entities such as asthma, non inflammatory colitis, chronic sinusitis/rhinitis, and in some patients myofascial pain disorders. It is clear that Dr. Barrett, in his wisdom as an experienced osteopathic family practioner, is onto something that has previously been ignored or under reported. In knowing Dr. Barrett, as I have for the last twenty-five years, I am excited that others can learn from his knowledge and experience in this important field. --Bruce Hirshman, D.O., Board Certified Anesthesiologist, Pain Specialist and Family Practice, Key West, Florida
