PreSchool-Grade 2-This book empowers children by establishing an effective phrase for "saying no" to unwanted advances. The focus is not only on dealing with strangers; the book also addresses those times when even the touch of family or friends is unwelcome. Be it kissing, hugging, tickling, or even a piggyback ride, when polite excuses don't work, such as, "Sorry I'm all hugged out for now," the unequivocal added argument, "because it's my body," should produce the desired result. The text is clear and direct. One child serves as narrator, speaking directly to readers as she and four of her friends act out various scenarios of both welcome and unwelcome interactions. Readers will be able to identify with the given examples and will feel the power in the keynote phrase each time it is repeated. The mediocre illustrations are uncomplicated drawings of the diverse characters printed against a solid white background with only an unobtrusive wash of color to lend depth. They simply serve the text. A note to parents explains, among other things, why the author feels it's important to begin strengthening a child's sense of self at home. "Children who can say no to their parents are best prepared to say no to others." This book gives them the tools needed to establish personal boundaries comfortably.
