About the Author

Hess is a mom, wife and working professional and native of the Washington D.C. area. The cookbook was born of a practical need -- the family's Hispanic housekeeper able to cook in her own language and culture and willing to cook American, but no tool to help. They collaborated on this tool with many uses!

Reviews

Beginning students of both Spanish and English will find use for Susan Hess' Bi-Lingual American Cooking. On parallel pages, Hess presents simple, common recipes for dishes representing North American, Mexican, and Italian traditions. These unexceptional recipes present few challenges, and many call for canned soups and other prepared ingredients. Hess even includes instructions for making instant mashed potatoes. Measurements reflect North American practices. But the main point of the book is not so much culinary as linguistic. Speakers of either language can learn a few basic principles of one another's language and have some fun in the kitchen at the same time. Beginning students will find class-project possibilities here. Mark Knoblauch
