Benjamin Franklin Orcutt, Sheriff of Kalamazoo County, was shot and killed during the early morning hours of December 3, 1867. Orcutt, a Civil War hero, having served in the 25th Michigan Volunteers, had also served as sheriff before the war. He became the first Michigan county law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty.
Now a book chronicles his story along with 80 other officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. From the Upper Peninsula to the Michigan-Ohio border, read about how they gave their lives in shoot-outs, traffic accidents, marine patrol, stopping jailbreak attempts, and other duties performed every day by our law enforcement officers throughout the state.
This book is a tribute to their lives and sacrifices. Some of these officers and their families have been forgotten through the passing of time. This collection of their stories will become a cherished keepsake so that their memory will never be lost again.
