"The diverse and accomplished literary community rooted in Oxford, Mississippi, is celebrated in this collection. Featured is never-before-published work from some of the most respected names in contemporary literature, including Barry Hannah, Larry Brown, William Gay, Tom Franklin, Mark Richard, and Ace Atkins. Several of the contributors step outside their “comfort zones,” and make forays into new genres in these pieces: Larry Brown, best known for his fiction, ventures into memoir with an account of his marine boot camp days at Parris Island; short story author George Singleton provides a nonfiction account of his most recent book tour; and editor Lisa Howorth and screenwriter Anne Rapp delve into short fiction. Food writer John T. Edge is included, Dick Waterman debuts his photo essay on B.B. King, and a remarkable redneck haiku is included for good measure. The varied and unexpected pieces in this collection provide a clear snapshot of the robust state of Southern writing."

About the Author:

Jim Dees is the host of Thacker Mountain Radio, a literature and music program on Mississippi Public Radio. He has written for the Oxford Eagle and is a former editor of the Oxford Town, for which he still contributes a weekly humor column. He lives in Oxford, Mississippi.

From Publishers Weekly:

Why is the small university town of Oxford, Miss., such a hotbed of literary talent? In his introduction to this anthology, Mississippi Public Radio personality Dees attributes the town's literary fame to the late Willie Morris. In 1984 Morris (Taps, etc.) came to teach at Ole Miss, and was soon followed by cult hero Barry Hannah (Airships). Both venerable writers appear in Dee's selection: Morris's essay "My Two Oxfords" works as the book's foreword, and Hannah opens the fiction section with "All the Harkening Faces at the Rail." In the nonfiction section, James Beard Award nominee John T. Edge describes how he followed in the footsteps of A Confederacy of Dunces's Ignatius J. Reilly by selling wienies for Lucky Dogs, Inc., and, in the verse section, Pushcart Prize winner Beth Ann Fennelly contributes some new poems. This rewarding volume will please readers who want to tune in to the best of the contemporary South.
