Synopsis

These three-CD collections feature audiences’ best-loved selections from National Public Radio’s Selected Shorts, an award-winning series of classic and contemporary short fiction read by acclaimed actors and recorded live at Peter Norton Symphony Space in New York City. More than three hours of recordings in each collection capture the intimacy of live performance. Stories are alternately funny, sad, moving, and exciting and make a perfect accompaniment to daily activities such as driving, cooking, exercising, and relaxing.

Getting There from Here includes, among others, David Schickler's “The Smoker,” read by Robert Sean Leonard; Rita Dove's “Second-Hand Man,” read by Audra McDonald; John J. Clayton’s “The Man Who Could See Radiance,” read by Paul Hecht; and Richard Dooling's “Bush Pigs,” read by Mark Nelson.

Reviews

The perennially popular NPR series "Selected Shorts" provides a lush harvest of stories and gifted readers. The standout in this clutch of tales is "Part of the Story," read by Isaiah Sheffer. Rife with raw humor and pathos, this is the hilarious tale of a woman whose five adult children (by five different low-life fathers)--all given up for adoption as infants--track her down. Other pieces verge on the pretentious and mawkish, but there's a flavor for every taste on this three-CD set, recorded live at Symphony Space in New York City.
