Kindergarten-Grade 2–Audrey Smith, author and producer of The Mischievous Bugs (June 2004, p. 77) presents her second original offering, a read-along book with CD. Smith created the story to foster a positive self-image in young children and to teach them to accept people for who they are. Combining story with songs, it is a tale about a witch who can't fly who throws a party but doesn't invite anyone she considers a "misfit." Among those excluded are a monster, a skeleton, a ghost, and a jack-o'-lantern. When the witch concocts her brew, it blows up in her face, and the misfits come to the rescue, putting out the fire and advising everyone to "stop, drop, and roll." The witch apologizes to the misfits for leaving them out, and then admits that she is a misfit herself, since she can't fly. The music created for this production is very good, and the vocals and back up instrumentation are excellent. Smith utilizes several different musical styles in her songs, including march and boogie woogie. The paperback book has full-color and rather amateurish, but cute cartoon illustrations. This read-along will fill the bill for parents who want gentle, non-scary Halloween stories for their little ones.–Beverly Bixler, San Antonio Public Library, TX
