Moira Noonan left the Christian faith in the mid-1970s after suffering a severe accident to which the Church seemed to offer no answers. She went on to explore nearly every path of New Age spiritual practice, mastering such disciplines as psychic healing, clairvoyance, hypnotherapy, reiki, and past-life regression. Her tumultuous life in the occult, and her dramatic return to her original faith, culminating in her deliverance from demonic possession at Medjugorje, are the subjects of this absorbing contemporary classic in the literature of spiritual warfare. Noonan's story has been an inspiration to thousands of people who have felt the inadequacy of New Age-inspired road maps to enlightenment.

Introduction Principalities and Powers
"Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our battle is not with flesh and blood, but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." So wrote St. Paul to the Christians at Ephesus, a city known throughout the ancient Mediterranean as a center of occult arts and pagan worship. [Ephesians 6, 11-12; Acts 19]
"Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." That’s St. Peter, writing from Rome, shortly before his death, to Christians suffering persecution in the cities of Asia Minor. [1 Peter 5, 8]
Nearly two thousand years later I can tell you that these warnings of the apostles are still very real. They’re not just old words in the Bible. Paul and Peter didn’t talk about "world rulers of this present darkness" as a metaphor for abstract forces of evil, or to frighten the naive into embracing their faith. I have seen the confrontation they describe, and have been delivered from it.
"The whole of man’s history has been the story of dour combat with the powers of evil stretching, so our Lord tells us, from the very dawn of history until the last day." That’s the Catechism of the Catholic Church [CCC 408]. This battle, it explains, started at the very beginning of our presence on Earth, when the serpent promised our first ancestors that by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, their eyes would be opened and they would be like gods.
The language of the tempter will have a familiar ring to anyone who has dabbled in the New Age. So will the pride that inspired Adam and Eve to choose the forbidden fruit. "You are equal to God. You are the creator. You can realize your true divinity." These are the promises of the New Age. It offers beautiful fixes for life’s difficulties, but many of its remedies are pathways by which demonic forces take hold in one’s life. This is what happened to me. For more than twenty years I studied and practiced the teachings of dozens of esoteric schools, first in a search for relief from chronic pain, then as a passionate devotee of the New Age trinity: Me, Myself and I. In a few days I was delivered, and over the course of several years I was truly converted.
Writing an account of this experience has sometimes brought me to tears — tears of thanksgiving that we have such a holy and awesome God; that He could, as it says in Romans, chapter 8, make good of my past; that He could look upon my life in the occult and save me from it; that He could deliver me from such evil; that He could take up my soul that’s been in such a battle and be my warrior and my savior. In gratitude, I break down and cry. And I thank God in the depth of my soul for my deliverance, and for being ransomed from this place of such darkness. Praise God.
