The second edition of the best-selling consumer guide to manufactured homes and purchasing land or leasing a home site, providing up-to-date, essential information home buyers need to make an informed purchase decision.
Completely revised and updated, including a new, annotated Construction Rating Table with 56 criteria you can use to evaluate any home—before you buy.
The Buyer’s Guide has been widely hailed as the definitive resource for navigating the tricky waters of the manufactured home marketplace. With this new 2006 edition, journalist, author and consumer advocate John Grissim (himself a manufactured home owner) has made many revisions and up-dates and added new material that make this invaluable resource even more useful to home shoppers.
Among the many additions are a greatly expanded discussion on selecting the right home, including a new glossary of common terms used in manufactured home construction, plus a new three-page Construction Features and Specifications Comparison Table with 56 criteria. This table enables you not only to identify what features are associated with different levels of quality but also to determine the construction quality (on a 1-to-10 scale) of any home you are evaluating. This is by far the most comprehensive detailed listing of construction features and quality ever provided consumers.
Among many topics receiving an expanded discussion is the installation (or set-up) process and the role of the set-up contractor, including a detailed installation check-list for home buyers. Warranty issues, and how to deal with them, receive added emphasis. Also included are tips to better calculate the fair asking price for a home, together with a simple formula for determining your offering price during negotiations.

It is a pleasure to bring this second edition to the manufactured home shopper’s marketplace. Readers may notice the title has also been revised slightly—from The Complete Buyer’s Guide... to The Grissim Buyer’s Guide.... and here an explanation is in order:
Following the book’s first publication, I was deluged with questions from readers about different manufacturers. In the absence of any guide that described and rated all U.S. builders (79 at last count), I resolved to tackle the project. The result was a second consumer guide, The Grissim Ratings Guide to Manufactured Homes, published in early 2006, designed to be an essential companion resource to this book. Thus, the two books together now properly comprise the complete buyer’s guide.
One final note: While I am a booster of manufactured housing, I am also an outsider, one of the industry’s most vocal critics whose loyalty is to the home buying consumer. Over the years I have crossed swords with more than a few builders who were not at all happy with my critiques. As a journalist I am fiercely protective of both my independence and professional integrity, as well as the credibility of my writing. Accordingly, other than income derived from the sale of my books and from speaking and writing about the consumer’s point of view, I neither solicit or accept a dime from the industry about which I write. My readers have my assurance that I intend to keep it that way. From the Back Cover:
Forget everything you’ve thought about "mobile homes." Manufactured homes (as they are now called), have come a long way from their trailer house origins. The construction quality and appearance of many brands are as good or better than conventional homes, and they can be sited and ready for move-in in far less time, often at significant savings. Yet for all their advances, manufactured homes are still mostly sold like cars: through street dealerships. True, most are reputable, but historically shady dealings, fraud and misrepresentation have been all too common.
In this comprehensive book, John Grissim, author of the best-selling companion resource, The Grissim Ratings Guide to Manufactured Homes, gives you everything you need to safely—and successfully—navigate the tricky waters of the manufactured home marketplace. He explains how the manufactured home industry operates, how to find a dealer worthy of your trust, how to make the right home selection, and, as important, how to be informed, empowered, and swindle-proof.
Exhaustively researched, with extensive input from both industry insiders and consumer advocates, this guide contains much information that retailers, even the good guys, don’t want you to know.
