About the Author:

A former Mr. Michigan, Frank Cuva co-owns and operates "FOREVER YOUNG" PRIVATE FITNESS STUDIO with his wife, Karen. The two, also have competed in mixed pairs and body building events. Together, they have won multiple Western U.S. titles, including King and Queen of the Foothills, The Mojave Desert Classic and the West Coast Classic.

For Frank, weight training began early--at age twelve, to be exact. He was very self-conscious because the other kids were constantly teasing him about being fat. By 1957 however, the "little fat kid" had won his home state’s body building title. College, family and a career soon put an end to Frank’s training. Without an ongoing exercise program, he began experiencing stiffness in his hands, muscular cramps, shortness of breath--the normal problems associated with the human aging process. Frank, unwilling to become an "old man", picked up where he left off seventeen years earlier. Of course, he had to make a few adjustments to "the old routine." By now he was forty-eight years old. The bench presses and squats he once performed with relative ease using 300 pounds, he now strained to do with only 100 pounds.

"Muscles of any age respond to a properly orchestrated workout program," Frank states, "and in a relatively short time, my muscle tone greatly improved, and my physical ’old age handicaps’ quickly began to fade." When his wife, Karen, also started a program, not only did the couple become closer, their effective pairing began producing competition titles.

At age 35, Karen Cuva began an exercise program. The improvements occurred so quickly, that she was motivated to study the subject of fitness more thoroughly. With the added advantage of a husband who was already knowledgeable, experienced and active in body building, Karen started a weight training program to tone and shape her muscles. An interest in nutrition soon followed, and the overall combination produced a better looking, better feeling, more confident and self-assured woman.

Karen went on to win numerous body building competitions, including Ms. California 1984, Ms. Mojave Desert, The Golden Valley Physique Classic and taking third place in the Ms. America competition, Karen Cuva knows the joy that hours of training and rigorous nutritional efforts can bring. But best of all, Karen knows that the real victories are improved self-esteem and the energy and vitality that she has gained through her diet and exercise program.

At age 71 Frank works out with weights four days a week, in one hour sessions, plus doing some form of aerobic exercise. "I have proven to myself that age only holds you back as much as you let it. Any normal, healthy person can have a terrific physique and lead a vital life well into their ‘later years.’ Just look at Karen and me. We did it, and so can anyone who really wants to."
