The poem JUST A COMMON SOLDIER, also popularly known as A SOLDIER DIED TODAY, was originally written for the author’s 1987 Remembrance Day newspaper column and was later included in his 1991 published collection RHYMES & REFLECTIONS. It has since been reprinted thousands of times around the world in newspapers and magazines, broadcast annually on national radio and television shows, and read at countless private, government and military functions. It now appears on thousands of web sites around the world, with more being added every day. It has been carved into marble monuments and proudly displayed on statues and plaques worldwide. Its appeal is obvious. It offers a poignant, touching view of the Common Soldier – the men and women who give of themselves unselfishly in difficult times; the ones who tend to be forgotten once the battle is done. With this in mind we present this collection of poems, all of which first appeared in the author’s column. Inside you’ll enjoy over fifty original poems, heartwarming, hilarious and always touching, from the pen of A. Lawrence Vaincourt.
