Newfoundland’s unspoiled wilderness is the setting for this John G. Millais classic, first published in 1907. We follow the author as he tracks caribou throughout the interior of Newfoundland – an untamed region that was virtually unknown to non-aboriginal peoples. He also chronicles the hunting of whales – a dramatic adventure from another era. Through his writing, Millais inspires us to experience the thrill of tracking wild animals, while at the same time imparting the splendour of nature and its creations. At times humorous, and always entertaining, Newfoundland and Its Untrodden Ways offers unparalleled insight into the soul of Newfoundland and its people. More than 140 illustrations, including 6 colour plates. This new edition features an introduction by naturalist Shane Mahoney.

John G. Millais (1865-1931) was an avid hunter, naturalist, writer and artist. He traveled throughout the world, writing several books about his experiences in Africa, Great Britain, Ireland and Newfoundland. The son of the renowned English painter, John Everett Millais, he was a wildlife artist of the highest order. In the early years of the twentieth century, Millais explored the interior of Newfoundland, tracking and hunting the great herds of caribou that migrate through this region. In 1907 he published Newfoundland and Its Untrodden Ways, an account of his journeys.Review:
It is a breathtaking experience to pass with Mr. Millais into the virgin forest, to see with his eyes and, without the dangers and discomforts, to enjoy with him the fascination of the big-game hunt. If it is the mark of a good travel book to make the reader earnestly desire to go to the places described, then this is a highly successful book. Mr. Millais s vivid narrative and a wealth of beautiful illustrations convey a most attractive picture of the island and its sport. - New York Times
