From the Introduction: "One of the greatest challenges involved in learning Spanish (or any language, for that matter) is vocabulary acquisition. In order to become a competent speaker of another language, you have to commit thousands of new words to memory. For most of us, this is no easy task. Therefore, language students are always on the lookout for any technique that facilitates the study of vocabulary.
Spanish Compound Words is based on the realization that even the most basic Spanish words are building blocks for advanced vocabulary items. For example, you almost certainly learned the word medicina ("medicine") in your Spanish 101 class. By itself, medicina is just one simple word that conveys a very limited range of meaning. However, by expanding a bit on medicina , you can convey some rather sophisticated ideas in Spanish: medicina alternativa ("alternative medicine"); medicina forense ("forensic medicine"); medicina interna ("internal medicine"); etc.
You can probably already see the trick here. When you learned medicina, you simultaneously learned 50% of each of the more difficult vocabulary items listed above. From a slightly different perspective, your preexisting knowledge of medicina makes learning the other words only half as difficult.
Nevertheless, it would still take some effort for the individual Spanish student to identify all these relationships between words, and then to collect the material into a format that would be easy to study. It is in this regard that Spanish Compound Words can help. Spanish Compound Words is organized into small sections--each of which has a basic Spanish word as its main heading. Under the basic Spanish word is a collection of more complex derivative vocabulary. I have also included numerous example sentences from authentic Spanish-language sources, so that you can get an idea of how the words are used in the real world.
You can read Spanish Compound Words from cover to cover, or simply flip through the sections of the book when you are in the mood to learn some new words. Although there is a limited amount of specialized technical and business vocabulary in this book, I have focused on entries that should be of interest to any student of Spanish...."
