This first art book from the publishers of FROM PARTS UNKNOWN magazine collects ten years of lucha libre and masked wrestler artwork by Xeric Award-winning artist Rafael Navarro, creator of SONAMBULO. Navarro's work, inspired by 60's and 70's Marvel comics, classic pulps, and film noir, is a unique take on the Mexican masked wrestler idiom. A decade of commissioned illustrations have been re-scanned and are run full-size, un-cropped and clean of logos and other distractions for the first time anywhere. This includes spreads for FROM PARTS UNKNOWN magazine, the Christa Faust lucha-pulp HOODTOWN; and poster art for LA renowned Lucha VaVOOM performance group. Also includes never-before-seen ringside sketches of Mexican masked wrestlers in action, costume studies and rough drafts of published work, and lost pages of Sonambulo comic book work. Throughout the book is DVD-style 'commentary' notes by both artist and publisher, discussing what's right about the pieces, what went wrong with previous drafts, what was rejected and why, and more insight into the creative process from two creative types who have championed lucha libre art in the U.S. since before it was cool and on the Hollywood radar.
