Making Room for the New: Selected Poems

9780976136453: Making Room for the New: Selected Poems

This collection of poems by a concert pianist explores the hidden emotions felt by those with chronic debilitating disorders. It glides through a lifetime of history, family and place. It bumps into memories of friends and trees and sparrows that see no difference between air and glass. You are asked to be still for a moment so you can hear the quiet sigh, the gentle laughter, and yes the anger that has in its sound no real complaint, but still there is desire. This volume will satisfy the need to hope for more and recognize that what there is can be enough.

About the Author:

Born in 1953, Jennifer Fellows is a longtime resident of Bethesda, Maryland. She grew up in her mother’s piano studio, learning to play the piano at the same time as learning to talk, and playing advanced music by the time she was seven. She began teaching piano at age fifteen, and also began accompanying her fellow music students who played other instruments. She progressed to accompanying college students, and then their teachers. In her twenties, she was staff accompanist at the National Flute Association conventions. She appeared in concert with a number of the world’s great flutists, including the principal flutists of the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In 1982 she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She married her husband Spencer the following year, and the two have maintained a music studio for the three decades since. Her piano performing skills curtailed by MS, she has found a new artistic life in poetry.
