9780976355519: Sir Norman and the Dreaming Dragon

Of all of the graduates of the Royal Knight s Academy, Sir Norman is the least promising to ever perform brave and great deeds. But one day when a dragon is sighted in the kiingdom, Norman is sent to prove himself worthy of the Princess Kilmeny. Things do not go as planned however, and after befriending the dragon Brampton, he is captured by the Troll King and must be rescued by an unlikely team of newfound friends. Charmingly written and lavishly illustrated in a traditional storybook style by Herb Leonhard, this enchanting tale of friendship and adventure is a delight for readers young and old.

About the Author:

Herb Leonhard was born in Munich, Germany but grew up in the United States. One of his earliest memories was of a beautifully illustrated series of German children s books. This, along with a childhood spent within the pages of comics, inevitably led to a career as an artist with a love of many of the classic illustrators, both traditional and contemporary, including the Pre-Raphaelites, Maxfield Parrish, Alphonse Mucha, N.C. Wyeth, Brian Froud and Roger Dean. Having been a professional illustrator and graphic designer for more than twenty years, he remains able to observe the natural world around us with a sense of wonder, and sees every subsequent painting and drawing as a new learning experience. His published illustration works include the book Lyrics by Tori Amos, Billy s Mountain by Steve Richardson, Matthew s Box by K.B. Reish, An Inmate s Daughter by Jan Walker, a series of classic fairy tales for Steiner Korea and his own coloring book, The Faerie Garden . He lives in the American Pacific Northwest with his wife, son, two horses, two cats, one dog and a plethora of chickens.

Review:

Heroes and heroines often must struggle to be allowed their share of happiness in fairy tales - otherwise, how boring - and Sir Norman and the Princess do indeed meet with troubles, but this story is told in such a lovely and gentle way that it achieves a dreaming quality, without a lot of angst or suspense. Older readers will appreciate the loveliness of the illustrations and the real and imperfect characters, while younger readers will enjoy the magical elements and the calming aspects of the tale. All can benefit from the assertion that teamwork and unexpected alliances can be beneficial, which are themes that are presented very well in this story. This is also a story that works as a testament to being yourself and playing to your strengths rather than bowing to the expectations of another. In Sir Norman and the Dreaming Dragon, Herb Leonhard has created a fine tale, warmly illustrated and told with a great appreciation for traditional storytelling. --Hattie Unglesbee - Faerie Magazine

Sir Norman and the Dreaming Dragon cries out with chivalry in a sort of 21st century way. In the end it's the princess who saves the knight rather than the other way around...and it's a story perhaps written for all of the physically imperfect people in the world. --Dori ONeal - Tri-City Herald
