9780976387787: Sinatra Singing

With a foreword by another great singer, Jerry Vale, this book is special in that it s strictly about singing: Sinatra Singing. For this book I called upon a wide variety of artists from Tony Bennett to Michael Feinstein, who were asked to explain how they sing, how they practice their craft, especially before a recording session or in preparation for a live concert, and how and if they learned anything from Sinatra by listening or studying him. Did Sinatra inspire them? If so, they tell us about it. You will find lots of things not included in this book. Things that are usually part of most Sinatra books: The Rat Pack, Ava Gardner and his other wives and friends, the angst and trouble that filled some of Sinatra s life. This is a book about SINGING. SINATRA SINGING. Inside you will meet his arrangers, conductors, musicians, read the interviews about his singing career, the songwriters, the songs, technical notes on bel canto, breathing, vocal cord problems, conquering stage fright, song polls taken over the years, singing instruction, the albums, and many special features from The Hit Parade to the history of the song "My Way" and others. This is the Sinatra book you have been waiting for that is indeed different, and that clears away all the dust and let s you in on the important aspects of Sinatra s singing career. You will love the great selection of over 250 photos. Many are rare.

About the Author:

About the Author - Richard Grudens Richard Grudens of St. James, New York, was initially influenced by Pulitzer Prize dramatist Robert Anderson; New York Herald Tribune columnist Will Cuppy; and detective/mystery novelist Dashiell Hammett, all whom he knew in his early years. Grudens worked his way up from studio page in NBC's studios in New York to news writer for radio news programs, the Bob and Ray Show and the Today Show. He has written over 100 magazine articles on diverse subjects from interviews with legendary cowboy Gene Autry in Wild West Magazine in 1995 to a treatise on the Beach Boys in the California Highway Patrol Magazine, and countless articles on Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, including a major Hope cover article covering Hope's famous wartime USO tours published in World War II Magazine. He has written extensively about Henry Ford, VE Day, Motorcycle Helmet Safety, DNA History, among other subjects. His other books include The Song Stars-1997, The Music Men-1998, Jukebox Saturday Night - 1999, Snootie Little Cutie - The Connie Haines Story- 2000, Jerry Vale - A Singer's Life-2001, The Spirit of Bob Hope-2002, Bing Crosby-Crooner of the Century - 2003 ( which won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Biography-Publishers Marketing Association),and Chattanooga Choo Choo - The Life and Times of the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra-2004, The Italian Crooners Bedside Companion in 2005 and When Jolson was King in 2006, Commenting about the book Jukebox Saturday Night in 1999, Kathryn ( Mrs. Bing) Crosby wrote: "Richard Grudens is the musical historian of our time. Without him, the magic would be lost forever. We all owe him a debt that we can never repay." Richard Grudens, with his wife Madeline, reside in Stonybrook, New York

Review:

From Jerry Vale: This is a book about singing, Sinatra Singing! The loving foreword is by another singer, me, Jerry Vale. Inside there are many singers who learned to sing from following just how Frank Sinatra did it, including me, then geared their own career because of his influence. It takes you from his days with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, and his own exploding singing career that had its roots in the New York Paramount appearances and developed at Columbia & Capitol Records and Reprise Records with some great concerts inbetween. The book stars my fellow singers Tony Bennett, Patty Andrews,Vic Damone, Michael Feinstein, Carol Kidd, Tony (B.) Babino, Pat Boone, Peggy Lee, Cristina Fontanelli, Michael Buble, Tony Desere, Julia Keefe, Lou Lanza, Roberto "Weatherman" Tirado, Johnny Mathis, and Bruce Springsteen, and from the past Matt Monro, Connie Haines, Milded Bailey,Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, among others. --Jerry Vale's foreword, part one.
