As the publisher, I thought that someone on the inside of Dr. Green's existing operation would best convey a most convincing point of view:
Carlton gives so much to everyone he comes in contact with. That, coupled with his true understanding of the cultural differences, diversity and motivational needs of those on the staff have brought us success. He is more than a director of nutrition; he is our daily bread, nourishing each of us consistently. He is there when we fall, personally or professional, helping us get back up again. He has shared many of his talents and expertise, providing numerous opportunities for each of to grow. I have known Carlton Green for seven years. Inside of my soul, I refer to him as my gift from God. Five years ago, he gave me the best (unsolicited) career advice one could. He said, Guy, you know your job and the systems well, you are disciplined and that can be attributed your military background. However, if you want to advance your career, working in an educational environment, you’ll need to get a college education." I have since attained by undergrad degree, and by Fall 2005, will have my MBA. He encourages all of us, and is a role model to many through his humbleness, enormous heart and phenomenal story of success, surpassing many obstacles throughout his life. He loves each of us as if we were his own kin and I have never met a more meaningful human being in my life and doubt that I will again. The best I can do is try to emulate this man and carry on some of his message. As a leader, Carlton has done what many long to accomplish. He came to us in 1997, faced with a huge challenge of turning this department around. He accomplished this task and much more than his own administrator expected. He did not have a magic wand and there were many roadblocks along the way. Through empowerment and putting the right people in the right positions, he began the mission. He provided each of us with the necessary tools, bringing us together in a collaborative effort. Thus, we achieved our current stand as one of the most cost effective, productive Nutrition Departments in the nation. Through his leadership, love and consistency he brings many departments together within the medical center. We have earned respect from peers within this industry and our organization. If you know Carlton, you know it’s all true. Guy Scimenes Assistant Director UCLA Healthcare, Department of NutritionFrom the Author:
