In the dark days since the attack on the World Trade Center, the question that many Americans have asked is: Why? Why do 'they' hate us as they do? Is it, as our leaders would have us believe, because they hate our freedom? To understand what others find objectionable in us, we must take a long and brutally honest view of how we act, versus what we like to SAY about ourselves. the facts, as this book demonstrates, are incontrovertible: Our history is an unbroken progression of atrocities, betrayals of trust, and abuses of the rule of law, both to our global neighbors as well as our own citizens. Since the arrival of the first settlers, we have cheated and swindled, committed the most sweeping genocide in history (100,000,000 members of the indigenous populations), attacked civilian populations with nuclear weapons, promoted conflicts at home and abroad, supported brutal right-wing regimes, bullied those weaker than us, and performed gruesome experiments on the most defenseless of our own citizens: poor southern blacks, retarded teens, and pregnant women. These, sadly, are the facts, and are what others see when we utter our proud slogans about loving peace and promoting democracy. But who among us is actually responsible for this ignominious state of affairs. As Befumo argues, all of these iniquities can be traced to three sources; big business, fundamentalist right-wing Christians, whom he characterizes as our own domestic Taliban, and a corrupt government that serves the corporations while manipulating the easily swayed voters.

From the Publisher:

I have to admit, this is a book I almost refused to publish--not because I didn't like it, but because, quite frankly, I was AFRAID. Perni pulls no punches in exposing the dark side of the United States Government. Starting with the first settlers, and working his way through the present, he shows that Americans haven't always behaved in a manner consistent with our self-righteous self-image.

Ultimately, ANGER replaced fear. How DARE they subvert this country, about which I would like to feel pride, but, faced with undeniable evidence, must instead experience shame?

This is not a book of conspiracy THEORIES. Perni backs up his thesis with actual documents recovered, despite overwhelming resistance, under the Freedom of Information Act. This is a book for patriots -- REAL patriots, who aren't content to believe catchy slogans and manipulative distortions. It is a book for those who want to make this a country about which we can honestly feel pride.

From the Author:

As the description suggests, this book evolved from my efforts to come to grips with America's place in the 21st.century world. How is it that the country I was taught was always good, clean, fair, and righteous could be such a target of international rancor. I very much WANTED to believe the our government's assurances that ‘they’ simply hated our freedom and our way of life. As I began my research, this was quickly revealed to be no more than simplistic propaganda. And, the more I researched, the angrier I became. The truth is undeniable: A cynical, self-serving ‘Republicrat’ junta had, in every sense of the word, executed a coup, subverting every aspect of the Constitutional government of the United States! The evidence is there for anyone with an open mind to see. While this book only exposes the tip of this insidious iceberg of corruption, it should serve as an eye-opener, and will demonstrate the necessity of taking back OUR government from those who have long ago abandoned event the pretext of serving the will or wellbeing of the American people, and whose sole allegiance is to the big business interests that finance our corrupt two-party system.
