9780976810766: San Jose and Other Famous Places

Welcome to the Memorial Edition of SAN JOSE and OTHER FAMOUS PLACES~ the Lore and Lure of the South Bay ~ By Veteran Newsman and Long-Time Political Editor of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, Harry G. Farrell. Follow Harry as he witnesses the growth and development of that "other place," San Jose, the toddling town with an "inferiority complex" that grew up in the shadow of its big brother to the north, San Francisco, to become one of the most influential communities in California. Farrell's chronicle stretches from the old neighborhoods - Goosetown, Tar Flat, College Park, Hyde Park, Robertsville, Meridian Corners - to the surge of Silicon Valley, and is peopled with heroes, knaves, cops, robbers, eccentrics and celebrities. Among the most respected and popular news personalities in the Golden State, Harry Farrell moved in the circles of the greatest names in the 20th century, hob-nobbing with presidents, rubbing elbows with celebrities. Keeping his homegrown perspective, he garnered a devoted readership who still speak of him adoringly. SAN JOSE and OTHER FAMOUS PLACES is as much Harry's story, as the story of a city. The adventures and misadventures of a go-getter reporter intertwine with the psychology and ambiance of a unique place, as he and the city cope with the comings and goings of the likes of Richard Nixon, Eldridge Cleaver, and Robert Kennedy. Ride with him as he leads a presidential motorcade on a high-speed chase through the Santa Cruz mountains; listen in as he fields phone messages from a news tipster who claims to get her scoops "straight from God," or as he and Pierre Salinger chat with a political unknown, John Kennedy. Forty years of chronicling the story of San Jose earned him the privilege, in 1983, of producing this book for the San Jose Historical Museum Association. Nobody could have done it better. This Memorial Edition will fill a void on the shelves and in the hearts of those who love all things Californian.

About the Author:

Ellen Gunderson Traylor, one of America's foremost biblical novelists, is a gifted storyteller who is known for bringing characters of the Bible to life. She has written 15 novels which have combined sales totaling over one million copies.
A former English and journalism instructor, with a Master's Degree in English, Traylor has taught courses at virtually every level, including those she created on writing as a craft for Whitworth College and Eastern Washington University. Her Write On! seminars focus on providing aspiring writers with a strong foundation in the basics. Traylor has created and taught fiction writing classes for Mount Herman and Seattle Pacific University's Christian Writer's Conferences.
Traylor has been a columnist and correspondent for a variety of magazines and newspapers over the years. An award-winning feature writer, Traylor has written screenplays and political speeches and served as a contributing writer/researcher for the Tyndale Family Bible Encyclopedia.
Some of Traylor's most popular biblical novels include Song of Abraham, John - Son of Thunder, Ruth - A Love Story, Joseph - Dreamer of Dreams, Mark - Eyewitness and Jerusalem - The City of God among others.
Her upcoming project, The Oracle (W Publishing Group, May 2001) is a sequel to The Priest, her first contemporary novel published by W Publishing Group in 1998, although it also works as a stand alone title. In both books the hero, David Rothmeyer, is commissioned by an esoteric Jewish sect to locate items and genealogies necessary to their goals. Both books mirror today's headlines, portraying current event s in light of fascinating biblical prophecies.
Having been featured in numerous articles as well as on both television and radio, she is a sought-after speaker for seminars, conventions, conferences and both church and school events.
The mother of two strapping sons, she and her husband live in Montana with their youngest, where she owns Port Hole Books, specializing in rare books.
