Will Eisner: A Retrospective is the catalog for a recent exhibition at New York's Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. It presents samples of published projects, from early Spirit stories to late, often autobiographical graphic novels depicting New York Jewish life, and also a handful of late watercolors and pencil roughs. Eisner's lightly caricatural drawing style was distinctive and compelling, but his strongest suit was his storytelling; and the inclusion here of an entire seven-page Spirit story from 1947 (reproduced from the original artwork) is key to conveying his genius. Comics scholars N. C. Christopher Couch and Peter Myer contribute prefatory essays that effectively convey Eisner's importance in the field. Those seeking a more detailed (and cost-effective) look at Eisner's career should also consider the longer and as copiously illustrated Will Eisner Companion (2004). Gordon Flagg
