The Charlotte Inn, regularly ranked as one of the finest small hotels in the world, is the subject of a new photography book that showcases the grounds, buildings, and unusual collections of art and antiques admired by both guests and travel specialists. The book contains 168 pages of photographs shot over two years by well-known photographer Nina Bramhall, who spent two years shooting the inn. The book chronicles the results of 30 years of renovation and restoration of the premier inn on Martha’s Vineyard by owners Gery and Paul Conover. The inn was in 2006 voted by Travel + Leisure as one of the best small hotels in the world, and in 2007 was again lauded by the magazine for “an extremely high level of refinement, even for this cultured island.” The book includes a history of both the inn and the work done by the Conovers, in addition to the nearly 200 photographs. It has personal stories from the Conovers about the dedication it has taken to amass the fine furniture, museum-quality art and unusual collections of objects that give the inn the look and feel of one of Europe’s great country homes. Celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Princess Diana relied on its discreetness to help shelter them.

The Charlotte Inn, located on a quiet side street in the town of Edgartown on the island of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, has the look and feel of one of Europe's great country homes. In its five buildings and surrounding grounds, antiques and art and architectural features are true to period houses of the 18th and 19th centuries. The collections within -- fine furniture, museum-quality art, antique flashlights and mailboxes, hatboxes -- are extraordinary; in many ways, the Inn is dedicated to the art of fine living, as fine living was experienced a hundred years ago. Yet it is open for everyday use, and 365 days a year hosts those who travel to the Vineyard. The Charlotte Inn was restored by Gery and Paula Conover, who live on the property and care for it. Their efforts to create what they call "a window into a gentler age" are constantly lauded by travel experts. Behind the Times on Purpose: The Charlotte Inn of Martha's Vineyard is a permanent record of this special place, captured over two years by photographer Nina Bramhall and writer Jan Pogue. It is a gift to those who have stayed at the Inn or who love beautiful things, and who love Martha's Vineyard.About the Author:
Jan Pogue is the author of 12 book, including a new authorized history of the American Cancer Society, to be published in late 2007. Photographer Nina Bramhall is a well-known photographer who shoots for Vanity Fair, House and Garden and other national magazines.
