An Ordinary Guy in Extraordinary Times

9780977162505: An Ordinary Guy in Extraordinary Times

A very personal story of the early Army Air Corps and of the author's adventures piloting Spitfires and Mustangs. A young California boy whose thirst for flight was fueled by Roscoe Turner and other great barnstormers of the 1930s, Robert McCampbell lived out his childhood dream in the wartime skies of Europe flying from bases in North Africa, Corsica and Italy.

About the Author:

Robert McCampbell is one of a handful of remaining WWII fighter pilots and one of a very few to fly both Spitfires and Mustangs in combat. He was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and earned a Purple Heart, and Air Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Review:

Bob McCampbell has expressed the inner feelings and thoughts of a sensitive man striving to learn to fly while fighting a war. He has shorn all heroism and bravado from his experiences, instead offering chilling understatements that adds drama. His is a unique account of flying fighters ... This is a book for the thrill-seeker and war historian. I wish I could have done as well. --James W. Vernon, PhD, USN Aviator, Ret

Bob McCampbell tells about the war-time experiences of a scared, brave and humble kid who did his part to save the free world. He describes in great detail the sensations of bad airplanes, long missions, scary moments and the camaraderie only a few will share. Pilots of any rating will sweat through the tough spots with Lt. McCampbell. He was a great fighter pilot and is still a great American. --Bill Chase, SMEL 2800 hrs.
