From the opening call to arms (as Erie, Pennsylvania prepares for the Cuban Missile Crisis) to sister Neda's successful construction of a rocket to beat Sputnik, to the drug-induced enlightenment of Willie and his black leather-jacketed gang, the Dialecticians, who will aid and abet Jarvis's search or and confrontation with Kara's ghostly lover, Chuck Rosenthal's novel amply confirms him as one of the most powerful and offbeat voice writing today.

In this second volume of a projected trilogy, Rosenthal continues the story begun in Loop's Progress (Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1986). Narrator Jarvis Loop has now teamed up with Karl Marxman to become a pirate on Lake Erie. Among the other unlikely characters are Stinky Jinx, an effeminate star athlete who convinces the whole football team to wear rose and baby blue uniforms with matching scarfs, and Red Loop, whose bowling ball can demolish a bomb shelter. Combining gritty working-class realism with exuberant fantasy, Rosenthal clearly has a gift for outrageously comic hyperbole; but his offbeat humor will not appeal to all readers. Albert E.
