9780977358700: Stanley Steamer Tales of a Novice Steam Car Owner and Other Antique Auto Adventures

Follow the adventures of an antique auto enthusiast as he starts out at age 14 with a Model T Ford Truck in great need of restoration, through two Dodges, two Cadillacs, and finally, a 1924 Stanley Steam Car 750 Phaeton. Although the Steamer was perhaps the most difficult to learn to operate successfully, it became Dr. Dawson's all-time favorite.

Thomas W. Dawson has been an active antique automobile enthusiast since the age of 14. This book features some of the highlights of that hobby. Years were spent learning how to operate and maintain the unique workings of this steam car. The challenges of operating and repairing a steam car are numerous. Dr. Dawson, with much help from other steam car owners, and with some trial and error, got his new Stanley purring.

He shares his experiences and his solutions to many problems which he encountered, complete with instructions on winterizing the Stanley and preparing it for the road in the spring. Steam car owners and enthusiasts will find detailed information they can draw on in repairing and maintaining their own vehicles.

Over 100 photos of antique autos, auto tours, illustrations, vintage advertisements, and technical illustrations will delight the automobile history buff as well as the mechanically minded.

The Stanley Steamer is truly a remarkable automobile. It is unlike any internal combustion engine vehicle manufactured. With the Stanley the power is derived from the flame. The hotter the fire the better the car performs.

Dr. Dawson's 1924 Stanley is a condensing steam car. This means that the steam that is generated and used in the steam engine is turned back to liquid in a condenser for use over and over. A non-condensing steam car only uses the steam once and it is exhausted out the back of the car.

Review:

I like this book a lot. A reader can sense the thrill of old machines, high pressures, delicate systems, oily mess, steam clouds, and the surprise shock of sudden explosions, with flames and singed hair! --Stanley Steamers Steam Gazette, John Woodson, editor

"...It's just wonderful! It reminded me of the beautiful summer in 1961 I spent in Manchester, New Hampshire, working in a knitting mill. And, of course it reminded me of my own experience with...my Stanley. You were quite lucky to have had knowledgeable advisors. As my Stanley was the only one in Germany, I had to struggle with the steam learning curve totally on my own. So it is hardly a wonder that by now the Stanley is my favorite car and I constantly try to convince my friends how good a Stanley is...In you Cadillac you have a sister car to my 1916 Packard Twin Six..." --Auto Museum, Melle, Germany, Heiner Hroessler, Director
