9780977386116: The Moon with the Sun in Her Eye

In The Moon with the Sun in Her Eye, Nana Lampton boldly explores the tension between the feminine moon and the masculine sun. Using the dual lenses of metaphor and image, she asks 'Why can't we see more clearly?' Responding to our local, global, and cosmic situations, Lampton places humanity among the plants, animals, rivers, mountains, continents, and cultures of our world. With a mythic embodiment who might have leapt from the brain of William Blake, Lampton's Potain Sieblung gives us a female figure both powerful and vulnerable, penetrant in her honest insights, and brave enough to sweep us stunned gawkers along in her wake.

About the Author:

Nana Lampton lives on a farm in Oldham County, Kentucky, and works at American Life Insurance. She won the Green River Review first prize for "Wedding Poems," and her work has appeared in the Kentucky Review, several times in The Louisville Review, and recently in New Millennium Writings. She serves as an advisor to Sarabande Books and as a member of the Corporation at Yaddo.

Review:

Nana Lampton's The Moon with the Sun in Her Eye is a book concerned with what Keats called the holiness of the heart s affections and the truth of imagination. In a time of war and great uncertainty Lampton s poems provide a kind of sustenance for the spirit through clarity of vision and a deep belief in the power of art. She is one of Rilke s bees of the invisible gathering honey and storing it up against the dark. --Greg Pape, author of American Flamingo

In The Moon with the Sun in Her Eye, Nana Lampton fashions portals for us to enter. A true lyric poet, she walks her farm in the moonlight accompanied by dogs, wondering how high her blessings might reach or contemplating how "our time here is a shallow mark" as she thinks of lifetime friends passing. In the quick cry of coyotes at dawn, she hears an "extraterrestrial wail" that admonishes her to "prepare to fly to work, hungry for it." Through a magical character called Potain Sieblung, Lampton envisions, among other things, making peace in a roomful of world patriarchs. If we are ready, we may gain courage on the wings of these brave images and transcendence on the "single trumpet tone of love" Lampton reminds us is a talisman for the blood and beauty of our transient world. --Jeanie Thompson, author of White for Harvest: New and Selected Poems

Nana Lampton's gathering of poems, The Moon with the Sun in Her Eye, is an outstanding collection. The voice has a wide range, from the delicately lyrical to the colloquial and anecdotal, from well-told narrative to evocative, sometimes mysterious poems of summoning and enigma. The inner and the outer world go easily together hand in hand in her poems. Lampton is a careful craftsperson, yet the result of her care is an easy spontaneity and a brave willingness to take chances. One can only admire her achievement. --George Garrett, author of Days of Our Lives Lie in Fragments: New and Old Poems, 1957-1997
