About the Author

Lew Toulmin is a travel columnist, advisor to foreign governments, and adventurer. Each month he writes The Cruising World for International Travel News and Travel Tales for the Montgomery Sentinel (of Maryland). He has traveled to over 150 countries and sovereign territories, and has worked in 30 less-developed countries for the World Bank and U.S. Agency for International Development on projects in telecommunications, disaster relief, public administration and e government. He holds a B.A. from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, a Master's in Public Administration from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in public administration and economics from American University in Washington, D.C. He has worked as a letter carrier, burger flipper, budget and financial analyst, professor of government, private detective, and labor organizer. Recently he was elected to the prestigious Explorers Club. Dr. Toulmin is also active in the Travelers' Century Club, the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Jamestowne Society, and numerous other heritage organizations. He is the vice president of the Hereditary Order of the Families of the Presidents and First Ladies of America. He is a Knight Chevalier of the Sovereign and Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (the Knights Templar). His hobbies include collecting military medals, genealogy, sailing tall ships, and of course, traveling. When not on the road, he lives with his wife Susan in Silver Spring, Maryland and Fairhope, Alabama.
