Collecting Florida:The Hampton Dunn Collection and Other Floridiana, was published in spring 2006 to help make the public aware of USF's commitment to preserving Florida history. Made possible by Charlotte Dunn's generous support and Special Collection Department librarian Paul Camp's strong grasp of Special Collections' materials, the book is heavily illustrated and written in an engaging style. In Collecting Florida, Camp explores many facets of the collections, starting with journalist and historian Hampton Dunn's career and collection. "Having known Hampton Dunn for many years, writing the chapter about him was the best part of the book for me," Camp related. "I had no idea he'd been such a dashing, go-getting reporter in his youth." Camp described the Dunn Collection as "a treasure of Florida history...perhaps the best known and certainly one of the most heavily used collections in the USF Tampa Library's Floridiana collection." Through Dunn's writing and research on Florida, he collected a wide range of photos, notes, and clippings that comprise his collection today. Besides an interesting read, the book acts as an easy reference guide to Special Collections' areas of strength for researchers. Camp also examines Tony Pizzo, another passionate advocate of history and donor of his own collection. Camp highlights other collections, including political papers, Ybor City's social club records, historic African American resources, photo and map collections, sheet music, and cigar art.
