Heir to the Hipster line of rabbinical leaders and sages, eleven year old Micah Mushmelon enlists Shraga Potasznik, the comic-book-addicted protagonist of this novella to make good of all things worthwhile in this world. An heir to the rich modern Yiddish literary tradition, Michael Wex paints a vivid, hilarious picture of the hasidic demimonde. His is a view into Yiddish culture at once erudite and super hip, and always true to the cadences of a language that informs so much of modern North American culture.

Michael Wex was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, the last brittle sprout of a Polish rabbinic tree. He spent his early orthodox Jewish childhood surrounded by a 40% Mormon population. Coming back to Yiddish during the revival of the 1980s after realising that his career as a Medievalist was not going to pay the rent, Wex soon discovered that Yiddish wasn t either. He drove cabs, worked in Tim Horton s, taught English, was a stand-up and finally got a break a couple of years ago. An overnight success at the age of 52, he has a New York Times bestselling book on the subject entitled Born to Kvetch.Review:
...wise, witty and altogether wonderful... Mr. Wex has perfect pitch. He always finds the precise word, the most vivid metaphor, for his juicy Yiddishisms, and he enjoys teasing out complexities. --William Grimes, New York Times
...he s stunningly, uproariously, laugh-out-loud-and-make- everyone-on-the-train-think-you re-a-lunatic funny. --Joe Eskenazi, J Weekly
for lovers of language there are few things more entertaining than Michael Wex --Gregory McNamee, Reuters Billboard
