These five articles represent pioneering research in North American Social History, Immigration and Ethnic Studies, and Women s Studies. Written by Varpu Lindström, the author of Defiant Sisters: A Social History of Finnish Immigrant Women in Canada, this selection includes the award winning article I won t be a slave! , first published in 1986. Her articles, based on hundreds of interviews, give a human voice to hard-working immigrant women. Her writings have been characterized as offering an engaging and thoughtful depiction of women who resisted so many of the conventions of gender, race and class when they came to Canada... Varpu has left an invaluable memorial to women s capacity for sisterhood, generosity, and tough-mindedness. For the first time, selected articles representing the best of Lindström s research on Finnish women in North America are now published between the covers of one book.
