About the Author:

The vision came to Sharon Diane Roberts while honeymooning in Greece. She found a cat she wanted to adopt, but discovered it was not easy when just about everywhere they travelled she had to prove the cat was immunized. "We had a little pet booklet with us and that made it convenient", Sharon brought the idea back to the USA and designed the new Universal Pet Passport. It is accepted as an official document by the US-CDC providing information for the home care and transportation of pets across the country and around the world.

Review:

"This 28 page Pet Passport with its clear vinyl cover is a winner. It got a great write up in the local paper. If you have ever taken your pets to a kennel for a "vacation" you know how you have to have all that "stuff" with you - we have 3 dogs and a kitty. Several times we've arrived at the kennel only to find we forgot something at home. Check this out - Inexpensive and it makes a great "Stocking Stuffer" for pet owners - Everything is in one place and this helps even when just going to the Vet". - Chuck Spano --Florida Folk Music - Ormond Beach, Fla.

Planning to take the family pet with you to grandma's house this holiday season? You might want to pack Fido'd paperwork just in case. While US citizens don' have to worry about producing documentation at the state line in most parts of the country, it might not hurt to be prepared. Just ask Laura Clifton, who recently bought a "pet passport" for merlin, her 8-year old tabby cat. Clifton uses the booklet, which was developed by Sharon Roberts to keep track of Merlin's vaccination records and other pertinent information. "It is just nice to have it all in one place. You never know when you might have to evacuate," she said. "It's great for taking your pet to the vet. That way, they can keep track of vaccinations, "Roberts said. The US government does not mandate health certificates for routine pet imports, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires that pets coming into this country have a rabies vaccination. the document must be signend bya veterinarian within 30 days before the date of travel. Otherwise, the animal could be quarantined. In Europe, pets have to be microchipped for indentification purposes. There, pets withour the rabies vaccination will be quarantined for six months. All European Union countries as well as many other countries now require a veternarian certificate issued in the United States have an official US Department of Agriculture certification stamp, according to PetTravel.com. Initially, Roberts said, she thought about marketing her idea only to those in the military, but later she decided to broaden t he market to the general public. It makes it easier, for example, to identify pets displaced in hurricanes and other disasters, she said. A little more than a year ago she met William Cummins at her local church and shared her idea with him. The Chief Executive Officer of Port Orange- based CAI Publishing, Cummins said he felt her idea had merit. "This book has so much potential," he said. "It can be used for vaccination acceptance as you go from state to state." His firm published the book. Copies are also available at Love's Whole Foods - Ormond Beach, FL and Dave & Company Hair Salon - Port Orange, FL , according to Roberts. Roberts said she has made overtures to several national companies that cater to pets and their owners, including retail giants PETCO and Pet Supermarket. So far, no deal. She also contacted officials at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and they have expressed interest in promoting the booklet on their Web site. Roberts who works as a dental assistant for the Department of Health, said she plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from each passport sold to the National Humane Society. --Daytona Beach News Journal - Friday, November 14, 2008
