Srimati Kamala is an American whose life for the past almost 35 years has been exclusively dedicated to the interpretation of the spiritual heritage of India and the life of Mahatma Gandhi.
She studied at the University of Rouen, France, Saint Lawrence University, New York, (B.A.) and the University of Maryland, where she completed a Master's with Honors in Special Education (1975).
She settled in Washington in 1968 to become identified with the ideals of the Self-Revelation Church of Absolute Monism and the Gandhi Memorial Foundation, both founded by Swami Premananda of India who came to America in 1928. The Church follows the spiritual tradition of Swami Sankaracharya's Advaita Vedanta with a totally nonsectarian philosophy.
Srimati Kamala was consecrated as a Swami by Swami Premananda in 1978. As the ordained Minister of the Church as well as former Director of the Gandhi Memorial Center, now President of the Gandhi Memorial Foundation, Inc., she has been in constant demand to speak before educational, cultural and religious gatherings in the U.S. and abroad.
In 1995 Srimati Kamala received the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values outside India. This prestigious award was presented by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at a ceremony in Bombay on November 5, 1995.Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:
I know we are here together - as before - at this pond.
All life is here: minerals, plants, animals, Thee and I.
Lofty clouds in a clear, vast sky, one great blue heron gliding gracefully by and wavering, luminescent leaves... refractions of one beautiful light reflected on still waters.
The pond, sacred vessel of life, confluence of elemental harmony.
Earth: body of sod, sand and stone.
Air: breath of infinite life
Water: current of a distant source unseen.
Light: vital power of sun and radiant illuminations of moon and stars reflected on still waters.
I ponder: What holds these shining refractions in perfect images?
Is it the solid banks surrounding them? the gentle, embracing ether? the pure, calm water? or the deep?
Please do not pass by this pond as you did before. Come, sit here with me in silence. See Thine own reflections on still waters.
