"A man whose heart appears pure shall deceive you. The power he holds over you leads you to evil. You shall denounce the ways of Our Grandmother. Another man comes, whose pure heart beats for you alone, and who has a pure spirit devoted to Our Grandmother. He shall defeat the evil and set you free." A prophecy has been cast against her. In a harsh world deep within the western frontier of Ohio and Kentucky, Calico Marie Turner must learn to survive among the Shawnee and trust the one man who hates her the most, Chief Little Owl Quick as the Wind.

Calico was a very interesting book for me. The series, Children of the Shawnee, began in the summer of 2008 when I wrote 700 pages in two months. I have always been interested in Native American cultures, especially the Shawnee people. I studied anthropology with an emphasis in Native American cultures in college. As an avid reader, I was always looking for a good Native American book from the point of view of the tribes. Yet those books are far and few between. Whenever the Shawnee people are in the media they are depicted as blood thirsty killers. I decided to create an authentic series with the story told from the Shawnee's point of view. I never wrote this book to tell the white man's history but to shine a light of the Shawnee people in a positive way. Calico is very different from my other books because I had to tap into a culture that is not my own. The experience was challenging and very enlightening. I learned to see past the bias accounts of the Shawnee in historical records and view life from a completely different angle. From the Back Cover:

She shall denounce the ways of Our Grandmother. Another man comes, whose pure heart beats for her alone, and who has a pure spirit devoted to the goddess, Our Grandmother. He shall defeat the evil and set her free. Calico Marie Turner, a white woman raised by the Shawnee and destined to become a great medicine woman, must trust the one man who hates her the most. How can she trust Chief Little Owl Quick as the Wind to save her from his best friend and village shaman, Hunting Bear?
