The great sages and all scholars tell us three things about history: 1. A people without history is like a tree without roots. 2. one page of history is worth more than an entire volume of philosophy and 3. They who do not know their history are doomed to repeat its mistakes. As we are admonished to remember by the 105th Psalm most us will not feel unduly challenged by the command. For the most part we view memory as a basic human quality that is mastered at an early age. Child development specialists tell us that infants by the age of six months know the faces, names, voices, scents and footfalls of everybody in their household. By three years of age little children have committed to memory their names, addresses and phone numbers. To that extent we tend to take memory for granted. However, it is possible for people to lose their memories. In fact so common is memory loss that it is well known in medical circles by the name amnesia. -From Chapter 1
