This travel guide is designed to satisfy the needs of the independent traveler, the organized tour, and the private-guided tour traveler. Three focal destinations are covered: Rome and the South, Florence and Tuscany and Venice and the Veneto. Itineraries are provided for each of these focal destinations and side trips are suggested that compliment each primary destination. The organization of each focal area is developed in the following manner: Background: Each focal area has a distinct and unique evolution. Accordingly, a brief review of the developmental track of an area is presented. The objective is to define how key issues led to the distinguishing feature you will consider. Pace: Each visitor will have particular interests and self-understood stamina. The intent of each itinerary is to cover the range of potential visitors. If a museum is on the itinerary, the important pieces are identified and their significant elements discussed. This is not intended to limit your visit, for audio tours are easily used in conjunction with the discussion presented herein, but the visitor with a limited viewing time or level of interest may minimize a visit and yet enjoy the experience. Detail: Regardless of how you prepare for your trip, recalling or fully appreciating key features requires on the spot prompting. The essential element of the adopted form is recognition that neither the tourist nor I are experts in art, history, or architecture, yet the briefest insight will considerably enhance your enjoyment of any trip to Italy. Enjoy!

Robert Englekirk was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but soon regularly relocated as he accompanied his "gypsy" father, a well-respected Professor of Spanish American literature. Before entering high school he had spent more than three years abroad and it was in 1951 that he was first introduced to Italy. In 1959 Bob graduated from Tulane University with a degree in Civil Engineering accompanied by a minor in history - an interest that would grow with each passing year. After three years in Spain with the Air Force, he moved to Los Angles where he earned his masters and Ph.D. while founding what was to become one of the most respected structural engineering firms in the world. Academia interest and gypsy spirit were genetically bestowed on Bob and he began immediately to teach and travel. He has taught graduate courses in structural engineering for more than 35 years and is now an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Diego and a Professor at the Rose School in Pavia, Italy. Publications include four books and over one hundred papers. Professional endeavors did not cramp his gypsy genes, for he, accompanied by his family, has visited every corner of the globe. Italy is one of Bob's favorite destinations and, as a consequence, this book is a labor of love; intended solely to enhance your enjoyment of any visit. Royalties from Dr. Englekirk's books are used to support learning through scholarships and research at the Englekirk Structural Engineering Center at the University of California, San Diego. The Englekirks reside in Southern California when they are not traveling.Review:
"Mr. Englekirk is an entrepreneur who has traveled the world extensively and showcased his imagination, photography skills and knowledge of history and culture into the most comprehensive travelogue on Italy we've ever seen. In fact, it is more than a travelogue - it is a map of what to see and how to see it, historical insights provided in no small measure - in short, a tour of western civilization through the eyes of Italy and its renowned citizens and how this most famous of all peninsulas shaped the world." --William Charles, The Abacus Group Literary Agency
"Dr. Englekirk's mission to teach his grandchildren about Italy has evolved into a terrific book that will allow the user to effectively explore Italy with a minimum of effort, beautifully and cleverly organized with historical and artistic detail. Highly recommended for the traveler who wants to fully discover and enjoy the Italian experience." --Judy Shorey, Independent Travel Consultant for Altour
