Ever wonder whether there's a hero within you? As a young boy, the author reveled in the fantastic tales he heard of his grandparents exploits resisting the Nazis. One thing always bothered him, though. How was it that these two seemingly mild-mannered people were able to do the things they did? Where did their courage come from? And how does one prepare to face life's great challenges? These are the questions this book tries to answer. For ten years and across two continents Victor Lerch searched out his grandparents story, visiting the places where the great events of their lives took place and talking to people who knew them during the war years. In the process, he discovered a framework to live his own life by, useful even for those of us who will never face such mortal threats. This book tells the story of that journey.

About the Author:

Victor Lerch, M.D. lives in Raleigh, N.C., where he has been a full-time Emergency Room physician for over 20 years. After completing his medical training and anxious to experience the culture of his heritage, he moved to Heidelberg, Germany for four years in the late 80's. Later, recalling childhood memories of his grandparents tales from wartime Germany, he embarked on a ten year quest to research their stories and preserve the meaning of their survival against the Nazis for his three teenage children and the generations of his family yet to come.

Review:

I was deeply moved by the account that Victor Lerch has created. The author describes so well the atmosphere of such an abnormal time, and he succeeds in identifying with the feelings and experiences of the people he writes about. This book brought me close to Dr. Lerch and his family. --Margrit Wreschner Rustow, Ravensbrueck Survivor;

What did a gentile German grandfather and his Jewish wife experience during the reign of Adolf Hitler? This book by their grandson tells that story. Well written, with a narrative not typical of most Holocaust memoirs, this narrative of their exploits reveals all too human people surviving under the most difficult of circumstances - he under constant scrutiny and risking his life to save his wife, she ultimately confined to a concentration camp. A riveting read. --American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants
