Jeff Somach's I Cut It Out: An (ex) Drunk's Guide to Sobriety is not your typical self-help book. If you are serious about getting sober, or know someone ready to quit drinking, this book could be the most important purchase of your life. It certainly costs a lot less than even a single bottle of booze, not to mention the costs to family, self-esteem and health brought about by heavy drinking.
Perhaps you have already read books along the lines of Easy ways to Quit Drinking or How To Quit in One Week. If you have, you KNOW they don't work. If it were easy to quit drinking, you would have by now and not be searching for another book on how to get sober, right?
I Cut It Out is honest. Overcoming addiction is hard work; but this book offers help, hope and humor along the not so simple road to recovery. It accomplishes this without forcing any one single approach down your throat. If you strongly disagree with something discussed, the author recommends you examine your objection and then move on to any of the alternatives mentioned if thats what is best for you personally. I Cut It Out is a straight shooting approach from someone who has been there himself and understands EXACTLY what you re going through and EXACTLY how stop It s from someone who, 15 years ago, was a helpless and hopeless drunk and now leads a normal, happy, and productive life.
Like most people with a drinking problem, the author had no idea what was wrong with him, no hope for the future, and was beyond desperate. If he Cut It Out, so can you, and this book is an excellent place to begin your recovery. This 165 page, easy to read book contains no magic answers; but offers practical knowledge and advice from a fully recovered alcoholic. Along the way, it may sometimes make you angry, sometimes make you laugh and some times bring you close to tears. Special sections for family and significant others, resources to find free help, and the combination of personal experience and professional insight makes I Cut It Out an enlightening experience for the reader.
To add to its unique approach, the reader has a chance to actually participate in cutting out a part of the book (symbolizing cutting out the addiction) to mail back to the author in return for a surprise gift to remind the reader that help and hope are never too far away. After 15 years of sobriety, the author, Jeff Somach, now works as a substance abuse counselor, along with his wife and co-author Dr. Linda Busch, a clinical psychologist. Their combined expertise is presented in this clear and concise book on how to CUT IT OUT.
Even people without alcohol problems will find words of wisdom about life and mental health within this sometimes serious and sometimes humorous account of the path toward reclaiming your life and your inner spirit.

Like millions of other Americans, Jeff Somach spent much of his adult life struggling with alcoholism. At the age of 30 Jeff stopped the useless stuggle and "surrendered" to the fact that he was an alcoholic. That decision, to stop fighting, to stop trying day after day to quit on his own, changed his life. Voluntarily checking himself into a 28 day rehab, Jeff got to work learning about his condition, where it came from, and most importantly how to treat it.
He has been sober ever since; celebrating his 15th year of sobriety on July 4th, 2007. Ten years after getting sober, he returned to school and recieved his Certificate in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling, and then his BA in psychology. Seeing the success he had with his own patients, Jeff decided to put down on paper everything he knew about recovery. Addiction is a disease and, like any other, requires treatment.
Dr. Linda Busch is a licensed clinical psychologist and Jeff Somach's wife. She has been in private practice for over 17 years and has extensive background in the treatment of PTSD, abuse, trauma, anxiety, and depression. Living 8 miles from The World Trade Center on 9/11, Dr. Busch saw first-hand the value of early intervention and treatment for many victims and their families.
She also does extensive work with families of addicts and alcoholics, helping them with their own stuggles, showing them how not to enable another's drinking, and how to love with detachment.Review:
Valerie M. This book helped me overcome my drinking problem which I had been struggling with for years. Jeff seemed truly to know exactly how I've felt and by the time I was done reading, I actually felt a kinship with him. He's a direct, no-nonsense kind of guy but also has a great sense of humor. Who would ever think you'd laugh so much reading a book about such a serious problem. I haven't touched a drink since finishing I Cut It Out, and I've passed it along to my friends who need it too.
Trish D. A quick, enjoyable read. Jeff doesn't pull any punches but doesn't shove anything down your throat either. You can't NOT be motivated to stop drinking after reading this.
Steve T. I've been a drunk trying to stop for years and years. I've been to four rehabs with no success. I've gotten fed up with all the people who have told me, You must do this, or you must do that . Jeff was the 1st person I've ever seen say that there's no wrong way to get sober, and he's right. He offered me everything he did to stop drinking and in plain language told me it was up to ME to choose and decide what I wanted to do about it. That alone was so liberating that it gave me hope that I could beat this thing for the 1st time ever.
Mike R. I'd almost given up on my wife and our marriage until I came across this book. She always drank, but the last few years it had become an every day thing and I was fed up with it. I had no idea what to do and no clue where to turn for help. I picked up this book and saw two chapters for the loved ones of alcoholics and started there. For the 1st time, I understood what she was going through and actually started to feel hope. I left the book on the coffee table and came home one day to see her reading it without a wine glass in her hand. Thank you Jeff. --Reviews
