Our reference decks are excellent wine gifts, but are meant to be a handy reference to be referred too often at the table, in the kitchen, or in the armchair. AGLIANICO |s Aglianico may be the most under-appreciated varietal of the red grapes. It's only a matter of time before this southern Italian grape is given its due place among the best of Italian vinifera, along with Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Aglianico was introduced to Italy (or cultivated from local wild Italian vines) by ancient Greeks or Phoenicians. As a result, sun loving Aglianico derived its name from the phrase Vitis Hellenico (Grapevine of the Greeks). With notes of fig, prune and cherry in abundance, Aglianico produces a highly mineral, earthy wine. Aglianico is probably the oldest cultivated grape in Italy and certainly yields a big, beautiful and charismatic red. If Homer took a pause from his storytelling to quaff a good wine, Aglianico might well have been in his cup. Pairs well with hearty meats and bold red-sauce pastas, gnocchi and buffalo mozzarella. Delightful with a ricotta cavatelli and garlic sauteed rapini. ORIGIN: SOUTHERN ITALY
