9780979926211: Test Drive Your Future, High School Student and Grad Edition: Your Step by Step Guide to Choosing the Perfect Career

Most students are never taught how to choose their career path, and as a result, end up in college majors and careers that are not a good fit for them. Up to 70% of college graduates are not even working in a field related to their majors! With the asking price of a bachelor's degree at an in-state public college hovering around $64,000 ($157,000 for a private school), young people today can't afford to choose their majors or careers on a whim. You wouldn't buy a CAR without taking it for a test drive, so why would you choose your future CAREER without test driving it? Test Drive Your Future walks you through a step-by-step process of uncovering, testing, and choosing the perfect career using proven resources from top college and career planning organizations. The pages are packed with real life advice and inspiring stories gathered from dozens of interviews with professionals who love their careers.

About the Author:

Beth and Jim Hood own and run A Little Bit More Fun, Inc., a lifestyle products company that produces guidebooks and other items to help make life and life decisions a little more fun. They are the authors of Where's the Map? Create Your OWN Guide to Life after Graduation, and founders of the Gap Year Scholarship Program. Beth also writes as the GPS Gal on Girlzone.com, hosting interviews with professional women and students and answering questions from teens about their future career choices. The Hoods live on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Review:

I am so impressed! This is a GREAT gift to young people, and their families. NO ONE talks to kids this way! You hit them with all their senses flaring . . . it's great. You take them seriously. But you don't expect them to know more than they do. Beautiful! --Joyce Reed, Founder and Director of College Goals

Jim and Beth Hood have once again created a clear and practical guidebook for introspection and planned action in Test Drive Your Future. I would recommend it to all of my gap year students and think it should be included in every high school's guidance office. Although geared toward high school students, anyone can utilize the helpful outline in this workbook to clarify interests and goals. The process of finding a passion can be life-long and Test Driving Your Future is a good reminder not to settle for less than true satisfaction in one's work in the world. --Holly Bull, President of Center for Interim Programs

Even though graduation is six months away, I'm still excited about receiving my Associate of Arts degree and beginning a new chapter of my life. Perhaps someone in your family will also be graduating, maybe from high school or middle school. Do they know what they want to do with their next step?

Besides choosing a career, another one of the most important decisions that teens and young adults will make is picking the right kind of vehicle. You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it first, right? So why would you select a career without test driving it first? That's what Test Drive Your Future is all about.

This new book by Beth and Jim Hood takes the reader step-by-step through the choices they will have in the future. It's all starts out before you even visit the car(eer) lot by identifying your passions, interests, and goals. Then you are asked to test-drive your intended career by knowing what will be expected and getting hands-on experience. Then you can drive home your new metaphorical auto and plan for your new car(eer).

Test Drive Your Future would make a great gift for any high school student or graduate. It will be their most vital resource to guide them in shaping their future. It will truly help each reader get what they want out of their life- and have fun along the way! And word on the street is that a new version intended for college students will come out soon. For more information, visit testdriveyourfuture.com. --Seattle PI (Teen Talk), Jessica Lippe, December 16, 2010

How many parents knew what they wanted to do at 18 and how many of these parents are doing what they thought? The answer is usually less than 10%. The misconception is that students should know what they want to do when they "grow up," but do parents know what they want to do when they "grow up"? These are some of the questions students should understand and be allotted the freedom to explore and navigate their own path. The ability to test drive your future is an essential part of self-exploration and growth. --Kathy Cheng, Dynamy Internship Year
