Hi I'm Hanna. In addition to writing I love to snowboard, surf, travel, ride motorcycles, and cook. The Earl series draws on a lot of my own personal experiences, not only from traveling to surf and snowboard but also on years of teaching and working with kids. It all came together in these fun books about a little blue monkey who wants to see the world. One of the most fun things about the books is that they are the stories of my adventures translated for a young audience. Many of the illustrations in the books are based on pictures I've taken while traveling. People, especially kids, ask me all the time "are you Earl or John?" A little of both. A lot of times I'm the confident traveler who's been there and done that. Other times I'm feeling out of my element and just trying to take it all in. The message I want most to share with the kids who read my books is that traveling and other cultures are something to be enjoyed, not a afraid of. Learning new languages, trying different foods and meeting people who come from very different backgrounds is a lot of fun. I think that this is a really important lesson to share with kids at a time when "different" is often presented in the media as scary. I hope you enjoy my writing and share some adventures of your own. One last note. I felt it important that production of the books live up to my own values. These books are printed in Vermont, USA on FSC certified paper using VOC free inks and 100% certified renewable energy.Review:
'Earl's Big Adventure in Costa Rica' follows surfer John and his primate companion Earl on a fun-filled, wide-eyed trip to Costa Rica. The pair explores the cultural offerings of Santa Teresa, meeting friends and practicing their Spanish along the way. The book is intended for an audience between three and six years old, yet presents a broader perspective than most literature in its age bracket. It is an introduction to travel, cultural diversity, authentic food, and languages...A fresh take on children's literature, 'Earl's Big Adventure in Costa Rica' has bright, fun pictures, an open-minded adventuresome message, and a talking monkey. What more do you need? --The Valley Reporter
This upbeat and educational book for children ages 3 through 6 was penned by Falmouth resident Hanna Haidar, an avid surfer and traveler. It is his first book. In this funky story, John and his monkey-pal Earl leave their homes on Cape Cod to take a trip to Costa Rica. There, they find out in what ways that country is similar to and different from home, and they meet new friends who also love the beach and water. Some speak English, others Spanish. But their words are always translated right away so there's no confusion. Easthamite Kimberly Newton's illustrations are colorful and engaging. Little ones will love the story, which takes them to a new place, and also love Earl, a blue monkey who just happens to have his own passport. --Cape Cod Times
