The adored adopted child of a stoic immigrant couple, corporate lawyer, Natalie (Nata) Dreyer, is beautiful, ambitious, talented and successful. She has achieved all that her father drove her to strive for, and when she marries the rich and charming Karl Albrecht, it appears her dream future is assured. But Nata's adoptive parents are keeping a secret.

An unplanned pregnancy presents challenges for Nata and the narcissistic husband who has been raised to demand perfection in every aspect of life. The premature birth of a son after an accident almost destroys them both.

Karl has his own secrets, and now he must confront the fear that his sins led to a tragedy. And then, when he is sure things can get no worse, he is forced to face uncomfortable truths about his own family.

Meanwhile, Nata is uncovering the truth of her past, and doing so releases her from the prison her ambitions and cupidity created and teaches her what really defines a woman's value.

Can Karl forgive his own sins, learn to accept imperfection, and come to appreciate the true meaning of love?

"Mortgaged Goods" confronts us with heart-wrenching questions about our capacity to forgive, to love, and to sacrifice.

About the Author:

Lorraine Cobcroft is an Australian author who spent much of her working life penning instructional and technical books and ghost-writing informational works. In semi-retirement, she turned to fiction and creative non-fiction, publishing short stories and novels. Born in Armidale, NSW, Lorraine has lived in four countries and worked in a diverse range of industries. A challenging childhood and marrying a ''Forgotten Australian'' has given her a rare depth of understanding and emotional perspective, creating a burning desire to ''nudge the world a little'' with her writing - driving greater understanding, empathy and, hopefully, social change. Now resident in a small beachside village in Northern NSW, Lorraine divides her time between reading, writing, gardening, sewing, and touring Australia with her husband in their campervan. Still madly in love with her husband after 46 years of marriage, she has three wonderful adult children and five beautiful grandchildren who are the light of her life. Lorraine is a keen book reviewer, produces courseware for writers, and offers critiquing and mentoring services for novice writers. She also operates a website, www.rainbowriter.com, marketing her works and providing critiquing, mentoring and pre-publishing services for writers. She recently joined the software company, Mclowd, as a casual contractor writing software documentation for a web-based self-managed superannuation accounting application, a job she loves both for the challenge it presents and the fantastic team she works with.

Review:

In a great new read by author Lorraine Cobcroft, Mortgaged Goods is a story that will grab readers from the very first words and won't let go until the very last. Following protagonist Natalie Dreyer, a beautiful and gifted corporate attorney, the story takes so many twists and turns that one simply cannot predict what will happen next. Natalie and the handsome and charming Karl Albrecht seem to have a life that any would envy, that is, until tragedy strikes and difficult things from her past cause major issues for the couple. Karl and Natalie's lives certainly will intrigue and surprise author Lorraine Cobcroft's readers to no end.

I so enjoyed Mortgaged Goods. I started this book, intending to read just a few chapters one evening. Well, hours later and much, much later than I intended to be awake, I found myself finishing the very last pages, tired but satisfied! Author Lorraine Cobcroft has done a great job in creating characters that her readers will connect with, relate to, and continue to think about long after the book is done. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I don't know what is. Mortgaged Goods is exciting, full of surprises, and just a fantastic read! Any reader who loves an intriguing piece of contemporary women's fiction should absolutely pick up this book. I recommend this book highly and am very much looking forward to reading more from the very talented author Lorraine Cobcroft as soon as I possibly can!

From the very first page the readers drawn into the book and their attention is held to the very last word. The characters are very easily relatable to and you find you can empathise and understand somewhat, what they're going through. It's extremely possible to believe they're real...It's an intense read at times but it has several twists and turns that give this book a unique feel. It will leave you questioning things you took for granted before.
H  Taylor, Amazon

A book that asks readers difficult questions isn't always easy to swallow, but when done in such subtle and powerful ways, it makes for a memorable read.
Riya Shirali, Amazon

This uniquely captivating book is far more impressive than it may initially appear. If you read it as a simple narrative, it's still very good, but the importance of the book, and the reason it has stuck with me, is the questions it leaves you asking of yourself once you turn the last page (or swipe...). For both of these characters, we see life "before" and "after", and while most novels have some sort of turning points or crisis around which it revolves, Cobcroft spent more time digging into the emotional carnage and honest self-appraisals that go into the recovery process. This wasn't a book just for women, nor was it a romantic and sappy sad story. It was a rather brutally sincere portrait of life after loss, and the pain of personal reflection. We often take on jobs, relationships, and life paths that aren't particularly healthy or beneficial for ourselves, and many people go years or lifetimes without realizing what really matters. Cobcroft explores the intense emotions of self-confidence and the fortitude of the human spirit. This story isn't simply about a Cinderella story gone wrong.... it's a complex analysis of what it means (and what it takes) to be happy.
