Whenever Texas author Lupina Vela was in the company of her young grandnephew, she was struck by how often she heard the words, Cuando regrese mi papá... ( When my dad comes home...). His dad, U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Steven E. Estrada, was deployed in the Middle East, and the young family felt his absence keenly in all the moments of daily life. All those moments, big and small, unfold in the telling of When My Dad Comes Home (Cuando regrese mi papá in Spanish). Vela s poignant and hopeful picture book is for children who are waiting for a parent to come home from military service. Lupina Vela comes from a family with a long history of military service, and through her own experience, realized the void in the children s book market for a book that acknowledged the emotions of a child with a military parent on duty. Her publisher, Pedestal Publishing, Inc., also recognized the need for a book for Spanish-speaking children on this important topic, and because of that, her book is available in two versions, English and Spanish.
