Review:

Intrigue in the House of Wong does something that few books do it delivers its readers a taste of the modern Chinese-American teenage experience. Set against a background of the old Chinese culture and the racial imbalances faced by many Chinese-American children, it offers an exciting tale of intrigue and excitement sure to keep readers turning the pages. --Margaret Doner, Lies and Lust in the Tudor Court

I was having deja vu Nancy Drew when I first picked up Amy Kwei s teen thriller, Intrigue in the House of Wong. But then, it had more tender romance than Nancy Drew. And it celebrated more the texture and treasure of American immigrants; in this case Chinese, Italian and Israeli. I think American kids and their parents will like it. And I think if it makes its way overseas it will reveal a lot about America that will be interesting and even helpful to those who harbor stereotypes about America, but lack an insider s perspective. And Amy Kwei is relative newcomer and an insider that understands both the Chinese and the American cultures very well. Ms. Kwei did her transgenerational homework with teen nuanced text messaging and rap and the challenges of teen life in America. She helped us savor all the flavors of New York City neighborhoods. She served us a generous helping of authentic Chinese food conceived of and prepared as an art form. But most of all she graced us with an insider s appreciation of the blessed richness of the Chinese American family. The family motto according to grandpa: Listen well! Rise to virtue! Reaching ancient vitality: The Harmony of Character and Home. --The Rev. Sandy Blake

Set against the fascinating backdrop of a Chinese restaurant in NYC, Intrigue in the House of Wong is an action-packed adventure, sure to keep readers on their toes from the very beginning to the exciting conclusion. --Karen Orloff, I Wanna Iguana, If Mom Had Three Arms

I enjoyed very much reading Amy Kwei s Intrigue in the house of Wong. She succeeded in an interesting and effortless way to explain Chinese culture, values and traditions. A better understanding between East and West is a major concern of the book. The House of Wong is a great way for the younger generation to do away with stereotypes and prejudices. The plot makes it fun reading. I recommend it highly. --David Brailovsky,A Covenant in Shanghai

Book Description Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 202 pages. This is the story of a family owned Chinese restaurant, which moves from Chinatown New York to the posh East Side. Wendy Wong befriends the neighbors and helps integrate her family into the community. She and her boyfriend are kidnapped. They escape and rescue the Israel Ambassador to the United Nations. The target audience comprises youngsters from 6th through the 12th grades. Also anyone interested in the experience of the Chinese-American youngsters who straddle two cultures. This book is unique, because it is a mystery that plays up the conflicts of Wendys individual initiative against the elaborate system of Chinese family ties and values. The younger brother, Winston, and the grandparents provide comic relief. Sounds and silence, colorful teen languages, rhythm of Chinese names, the ethnic accents of New York, and rumbles of a busy city are the underlying threads of music in this action packed story. The book includes a section on Reading Group Guide. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9780981549903
